Gap Year… almost a year on…

So, I realised the other day that I never really rounded off our trip around the world once we got back. I know I blogged about each place and the stuff we did, but I’d thought I just quickly mention coming back to the UK and a few other things, seeing as its not long now until its a year since we left the UK on our trip in the first place!

Arriving home after 4 months away was strangely surreal and almost anti-climatic at the same time. I don’t know what I really expected as we landed at Terminal 5, Heathrow, but thinking back to it, I guess I was thinking back to everything we’d done whilst away, all the people we’d meet and passed by not to mention the places themselves. It was one of those moments in life where, as odd as it sounds, you wish there was some music playing, announcing your return to the real world. I say real world as it did feel really strange for the first couple of days being back at home and not travelling anywhere, having to get up early for airports or sorting out the next hotel/hostel/friends to stay with. New Zealand New York!

New Zealand was an awesome experience made pretty much perfect by the time we spent on the Kiwi Experience buses. Kiwi Experience is a company that takes people all over the North and South islands of New Zealand. The best part of this is that you can jump off and on the buses pretty much whenever you want should you want to spend an extra few days in one place or do more activities.

We flew into Christchurch on April 22nd and started on the Kiwi Experience bus the next day. Some id the reviews about the Kiwi Experience say that its just a big party bus and to a degree it is, most people go out in the evenings for drink or two and others will only just have git back to the hostel as the bus is ready to leave in the morning but if you don’t want to go out every night there is there was always something else to do either at the hostel or in the local area.

The Last 3 weeks in Australia

Seeing as the train takes just around 9 hours to get to Sydney from Benalla train station, I thought this would be a good time to update my blog and anyone who’s been reading it with what we have been upto for the last 3 weeks.

Over the last 3 weeks we have been lucky enough to have helped as volunteers at Kangaloola wildlife sanctuary run by Glenda Elliott and her husband Ron. Volunteers of all ages come and lend a hand learning from Glenda about how to look after the animals such as Kangaroos, Wallabees, Possums, Cockatoos and Wombats.

It’s hard work but very rewarding when you can spend time teaching a Joey to hop, feed Wombats from the bottle and try and not lose a finger to a Cockatoo!

Whilst there myself, Todd, Daniel (a 25 year old from Sicily who was a great laugh and good friend) and Ron, built a new aviary for 3 frog-mouth Owls to move into. It took around 4 days to complete and although it was hard work it was great to see it finished and the 3 Owls inside it!

Australia – Part 2!

Hey All,

Sorry I haven’t updated my blog in a while, been quite busy travelling up the North-East side of Australia and then with a Carriage Driving event with one of the horses we have been out riding with.

So, February was all taken up with travelling up North stopping at various places along the way to stay with friends of friends or to see the sights of the area. Todd, Clive and myself all took turns driving the Subaru and we have clocked up a total distance driven just short of 5000 Kilometers, not including the few thousand Km up to Cairns from Brisbane airport too!

We stopped at several very beautiful places along the way to each major stop or city and have met some great people who we can’t thank enough for their hospitality. From Jindabyne, Narooma, Sydney, Orange, Boonah, Mooloolaba and Cairns we really did meet some fantastic people who’s personal insight of each area made each stop more and more memorable!

Australia – Part 1 so far…

Hey all,

Been in Australia just over a week now and truly enjoying ourselves as much as possible :)

We have been learning to ride and had about 5 or 6 sessions now, up at 6:30am to start at around 7am whilst its still cool i.e. low 20c (if not lower!) as during the day it has so far reached 37c I think so after the morning ride its pretty much relaxing with the air con on for the rest of the day (thats a lazy day :P )

Other days, we have been taken out to see the surrounding countryside and wildlife with the occasional trip into a town for the essentials such as sunglasses, sun cream along with a decent hat :D

On Wednesday (27th of Jan) – we went up to Lake Buffalo and meet up with some of Jill and Clive’s friends (the friends we are staying with) who took us out onto the water and got us water skiing, knee boarding and having a ride on a biscuit (big inflatable biscuit shaped thing :P ) which you have to hold onto as the speed boat whips you round to try and get you off! Possibly the most fun we have had so far!!!
